Protection Review
Earthquake Coverage
Earthquake is not included in the standard homeowner
policy. It can usually be purchased for an additional
premium. The deductible for this coverage is usually
5% of the coverage amount (not the loss amount)
Backup of Sewers and Drains.
This covers water damage caused by water that come into
the home through a drain or other system that is designed to
drain water from your home. This is NOT Flood
Insurance. Flood is "surface water" and flood policies
are only available through the National Flood Insurance
Program.
Identity Theft
ID theft coverage helps cover the cost to restore the
security of your identity. It does not cover the cost
of items or money stolen through the use of your identity.
Some companies also offer services to aid you in restoring
your identity.
Auto Liability
This is the maximum amount of money a company will pay
on your behalf for damages you have caused in an at-fault
accident. Sometimes it is shown as one "Combined
Single Limit" such a $300,000. Sometimes companies
split the limit to cover a certain amount per person, and a
total amount per accident. It must pay for things like
medical bills, time off work, pain and suffering, and
repairs of damaged property. An auto accident is the most
likely source of a large lawsuit and we recommend most
people have at least $500,000 liability. You may also
want to consider a personal umbrella
to give you even more protection.
Uninsured and Under-insured Motorist Bodily
Injury
This coverage pays you for injury related costs you could
have collected from the other party in a accident if the
other party would have had insurance. It does
not pay to fix your vehicle. This is for
things like your medical bills, time off work, and pain and
suffering.
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage.
This coverage pays to repair your vehicle
if it is damaged by an uninsured motorist. If you have
collision coverage, it is not necessary.
Personal Umbrella
A personal umbrella provides you with
additional coverage if you are sued for an amount higher than
your auto or personal liability limit. It is available
in increments of $1,000,000 and is usually between $100 and
$250 per year, depending on the number of vehicles, homes,
and drivers you have. We think this is an excellent
value and recommend a personal umbrella for most of our
clients.
